The statement on Race Equality forms part of the college Equal Opportunities Policy and reflects the college Mission Statement.
The requirement of the Race Relations (Amendment) Act will involve Directors, staff, students and all external organisations who are associated with the college for business or partnership purposes.
General Duty/Race RelationsThe college will seek to:
- Eliminate racial discrimination
- Promote equality of opportunity
- Promote good relations between people of different racial groups.
In addition, further education institutions also have specific duties placed upon them. The college will seek to:
- Prepare a written statement on how we will meet the specific duties
- Maintain a copy of the statement
- Have in place arrangements for fulfilling our duties
- Assess the impact of our policies, including the statement on race equality, on learners, and on staff of different racial groups.
- Have in place arrangements for publishing the statement on race equality and the results of the measurement of the impact of our policies and procedures on different racial groupings.
The college will pursue its commitment to race equality through a Race Equality Action Plan. The Plan will be developed in consultation with local groups who represent ethnic minority groups and will be monitored monthly at SMT and termly through the Quality and Curriculum Group and will be informed by consultation with local agencies that represent BME groups.
The Race Equality Plan and equal opportunities data will be taken to the Quality and Curriculum Group in conjunction with reports on retention and achievement and progression of learners and staff from BME groups. Termly monitoring will take place.
The college will ensure that all staff are aware of their responsibilities in promoting positive race relations and not discriminating on racial grounds. Training will be provided on, for example, review of teaching and learning materials and delivery styles, for identifying racial bias and challenging stereotypes.
The college will support all learners in the promotion of racial equality and the avoidance of stereotyping. Race equality will be embedded in to the delivery of the curriculum and all learners will benefit from access to a range of experiences of cultural diversity.
An ongoing process of impact assessment will take place on an annual basis to ensure that policies and procedures present no adverse impact on racial grounds. The outcomes of all impact assessments will be published on the college website.
